Raising Cans is the Comet Cupboard’s annual food drive art contest event, where staff, student, and corporate individuals and teams compete for bragging rights and the opportunity to help stock the Comet Cupboard! We are excited to provide many opportunities for individuals and teams to participate.
When: Spring 2026
Where: Visitor Center Atrium
Time: 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Itinerary for the event
10:00 a.m.: Event begins at the Visitor Center Atrium. The teams can start checking in.
11:00 a.m.: Lunch will be served.
11:30 a.m.: End of structure building time for our teams. Judging will begin.
12:00 p.m.: We will announce the winners!
12:30 p.m.: End of event
How to Register
Registration usually opens between January and March. If you’d like to be notified when registration opens, sign up for our newsletter.
How to Participate
Individuals and teams can participate in any of the following categories of competition. Up to ten individuals may participate on a single team, and a group/department may have more than one team participate. Once we receive your registration form, we will follow-up with you to confirm your registration and communicate specific details regarding participation for the day of the event.
- Most Items Collected – We will have Comet Cupboard volunteers on hand to help count the items during the event.
- Best Overall Build – This is your opportunity to be creative to assemble you collected items into a single build/structure.
We will have both awards for each of the following groups: UTD Department, UTD School, UTD Student Organization and Community/Corporate Partners.

Student Group Competition


Team Black Students in Medicine with an Anatomical Heart tied with the CIS Tech Leadership CAN-cil with the Plinth.

OUE Nebulas and First Gens collected most donations among with the student groups with 241 items.

Burj Canlifa received an Honorable mention in Organization of Structure with the Burj Khalifa.
Department Competition

OIT Outreach (Office of Information Technology) win Best Overall Build with a UTD Heart.

Everyone Can Eat (Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering) won with the most donations, collecting an outstanding 3,563 items.

ORI- PAC (Office of Research and Innovation) received an Honorable Mention in Creativity with a PAC-MAN display.

School Competition

The School of Behavioral and Brain Science won Most Items Collected with 991 items!
Student Group Competition

COMM-ets won Most Creative Build with their creation of Tobor! COMM-ets also collected the most donations among student groups with 1,594 items!
Department Competition

Research Rangers (Office of Research and Innovation) won Most Creative Build! Not only did they built a baseball stadium, you can also see the baseball players!

Everyone Can Eat (Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering) won with the most donations, collecting an outstanding 4,178 items for the Comet Cupboard!

Team BBS won with the most donations, collecting an outstanding 3,489 items for the Comet Cupboard!
Department Competition

The Office of Financial Aid won the best CANstruction with their CRAYON 8 sculpture!

The Office of Budget and Finance collected 3,763 items, winning the most items collected competition!
Student Group Competition

McDermott Tin Titans won the best CANstruction with their cereal-powered rocket! McDermott Tin Titans also collected the most donations among student groups.
